Mobile BayBears Drop Series Finale to the Jacksonville Suns, 5-1
Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 03:43PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – MOBILE, Ala. - After giving up first-inning runs for the fourth straight night, the BayBears had another hill to climb, but they couldn't reach the top in a 5-1, rubber game loss to the Jacksonville Suns.
Suns (19-21) leadoff batter James Tomlin had a huge night with four hits including a double in the first inning, which put him in scoring position for Ivan DeJesus, Jr. DeJesus knocked a single to right that skipped by Cyle Hankerd, allowing Tomlin to score. DeJesus later came in on a single by Russell Mitchell to make it 2-0 Jacksonville.
The only BayBear (18-22) run scored in the bottom of the first as Greg Thomson led off with a double and tallied on a bases loaded sac fly by Brandon Burgess, who drove Tomlin all the way back to the wall in left. Jacksonville added to their lead in the fifth as Cody Evans unleashed a wild pitch with the bases loaded, bringing Tomlin home.
In the ninth, Tomlin and DeJesus would touch the dish again on a two-run double by Greg Jacobs. Adam Howard (3-2) started for the BayBears and surrendered six hits in 4.1 innings. Jesus Castillo (2-2) and three relievers including Brent Leach (S, 2) were solid for the Suns. Castillo worked five frames while Leach picked up the final six outs.
After an off day on Thursday, the BayBears will start a five-game series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (24-16) on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Brooks Brown (2-4, 4.17) will be on the bump for the BayBears at Pringles Park. The BayBears return home on Saturday, May 23, to battle the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:05 p.m.
