Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 02:57PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – (Trenton, NJ) - One day after 28 baserunners reached base safely for Portland, the Sea Dogs had 22 baserunners on 10 hits and 11 walks, defeating the Trenton Thunder 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Waterfront Park in front of 7,622.
The Sea Dogs have 23 walks in the series and lead the Eastern League with 184. Portland has taken the first two games from Trenton and clinched their first series win at Waterfront Park since August 18-20. The victory puts the 'Dogs a 1/2 game behind Trenton for the top spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
Kyle Jackson (2-0) retired all four batters to earn the win for Portland. Michael Gardner (2-3) suffered the loss for Trenton, surrendering four unearned runs in two innings on two hits and two walks.
Portland's bullpen yielded only two baserunners (both walks in the 9th inning off Beau Vaughan) in 4 and 1/3 scoreless innings of work.
Kris Johnson made the start for Portland and allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits, two walks and one strikeout. The game featured 12 unearned runs - eight allowed by Trenton.
Aaron Bates had the game-winning hit, delivering a two-run single in the sixth inning to give Portland a 7-6 lead. The Sea Dogs trailed 6-3 entering the inning but scored four 2-out runs off Gardner to take the lead. Prior to Bates' at-bat, Mark Wagner was hit-by-a-pitch to force in a run and John Otness drew a bases-loaded walk.
Portland added three runs in the ninth inning off Eric Wordekemper. Jeff Corsaletti nailed a 2-run double off the right-field wall and Iggy Suarez delivered a run-scoring single.
Corsaletti had two hits, including a 2-out, run-scoring single in the second inning. Tony Granadillo knocked in the game's first run with a 2-out RBI single. Portland had an early 2-0 lead but Trenton scored the next five runs.
The Sea Dogs will look for the sweep on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. RHP Justin Masterson (1-2, 3.06) will face RHP Jason Jones (5-0, 2.36).
Notes...Portland went 6-for-20 with RISP and has 50 baserunners in the two games...Zach Daeges drew four walks, one shy of a franchise record...Portland's bullpen has been scoreless in their last 10 and 1/3 innings.
