MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In taking three of four from first-place Frisco Wednesday through Saturday at Whataburger Field, the Hooks averaged eight runs and 12½ hits per game. That offensive bounty has escaped them in San Antonio.
Matt Buschmann tossed five innings of shutout ball and Brett Dowdy added two hits and two RBI's as the Missions blanked the Hooks for a second straight day 5-0 at Wolff Municipal Stadium Tuesday morning and afternoon.
Buschmann (3-2) navigated his way through trouble in the first two innings to keep the Hooks from taking an early lead. Singles by Wladimir Sutil and Chris Johnson gave the Hooks runners at the corners with one out in the first. Buschmann got Ray Sadler to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
In the second, Ole Sheldon led off with a walk and went to second three batters later when Jose Lopez reached on an error by Missions' third Advertisement = baseman Seth Johnston. Sergio Perez, Corpus Christi's starting pitcher, singled to right to load the bases with two out. But Buschmann got the pitch he needed with the count full, inducing a ground ball off the bat of Sutil that Buschmann fielded to record the final out of the frame.
Perez (1-1), who looked good for a second straight start, gave up just one run during his 4.1 innings on the hill, but that's all the San Antonio staff would need. Kyle Blanks provided that run when he socked his third homer of the year over the wall in left-center in the fourth. Perez, removed after 90 pitches, allowed six hits and a pair of walks while striking out three.
The Missions tacked on three runs in the seventh off reliever Sean Walker. Dowdy provided the big hit – a two-run double off the wall in left-center to give San Antonio a relatively comfortable 3-0 lead.
Buschmann scattered four hits and a walk. He tied his season high with eight strikeouts.
The Hooks, who entered Tuesday's game with the second best run production in the Texas League, have not scored a run in 23 consecutive innings.
The Missions, 5-0 winners over Midland on Saturday, have not allowed a run over their last 31 innings.
Brunch with the Hooks and Missions takes place again Wednesday morning at 11:05. Bud Norris (3-1) ascends the hill for Corpus Christi while lefty Steve Garrison (2-2) attempts to keep the streak alive for San Antonio.
