Memphis Redbirds Win in Walk-Off Style Against Oklahoma RedHawks, 6-4
Friday, May 16, 2008 at 03:14PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis picked up a walk-off home run from Joe Mather Thursday night to beat Oklahoma 6-4 in 12 innings at AutoZone Park.
Mather belted the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 12th inning over the left field wall to give the Redbirds the victory. Brian Barden led the ‘Birds with three hits, including a single in the final frame. Mark Johnson chipped in a pair of hits and had a two-run single in the sixth to put Memphis on top. However, the club’s catcher left the game in the bottom of the ninth inning after being hit by a pitch.
Nelson Cruz paced Oklahoma’s 13-hit attack with three hits of his own. Cruz scored the tying run in the ninth inning after a leadoff triple. Jason Botts put the RedHawks on top in the first inning with a two-run shot to right field. Kazuo Fukumori took the loss after giving up Mather’s home run. Starter Elizardo Ramirez tossed seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits.

John Wasdin picked up the win in relief for the Redbirds pitching one inning. Starter Anthony Reyes pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The right-hander threw 68 pitches, 42 for strikes. Memphis used a season-high seven pitchers on their way to their second extra-inning victory of the year.
P.J. Walters gets the ball for the ‘Birds tomorrow and will face Rangers top pitching prospect Eric Hurley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
