In game one, Paulo Orlando singled home Billy Killian with one out in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Warthogs the walk-off victory. Winston-Salem entered the final frame trailing by a run, but tied the game when Killian lined an RBI single that scored C.J. Retherford.
Kinston scored three runs in the second inning off Warthogs starting pitcher Aaron Poreda. Niuman Romero brought the first run across with an RBI single that plated Carlos Rivero. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, Brian Juhl rolled a grounder back to the mound that Poreda threw away at first base which allowed both runners to score to give the K-tribe a 3-0 lead.
Winston-Salem put a run on the board in the fifth inning when Retherford lifted a
ADVERTISEMENT solo home run off Josh Tomlin to cut the Warthogs deficit to 3-1. An RBI groundout by Brandon Allen in the sixth inning brought Winston-Salem within a run to setup the dramatic finish. Poreda (4-2) tossed a complete game to garner his fourth straight win as he limited Kinston to three runs (one earned) on four hits.
In the nightcap, Jim Deters (2-1) tossed five shutout innings in his first start of season to carry Kinston to the split. A two run single in the second inning by John Drennen was more than offense as the K-Tribe added three additional runs in the sixth inning of Winston-Salem reliever Steve Spurgeon.
Warthog’s starter Levi Maxwell, who was making his Carolina League debut, allowed two runs in four innings to take the loss. Paulo Orlando supplied the only offense for Winston-Salem with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
