Friday, May 2, 2008 at 10:26AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats closed out their homestand by exploding for a season-high nine extra-base hits, including home runs from Travis Snider, Aaron Mathews and Ryan Patterson, to wallop the Reading Phillies, 14-4, in a Thursday matinee before 6,128 fans at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
New Hampshire (9-16) blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on five hits. Josh Kreuzer (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB) singled to lead off the frame against losing pitcher Andrew Carpenter. Erik Kratz, Chris Gutierrez and Scott Campbell (2-for-6, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R) delivered three straight RBI doubles off Carpenter before Patterson (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) added the fourth run-scoring double of the inning off reliever Shane Youman, staking the Fisher Cats to a 7-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Kratz (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB) singled home Anthony Hatch (2-for-5, RBI, R, 2B) from third base.
New Hampshire increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Snider (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, BB) hit his first career Eastern League home run, lifting Carpenter’s 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-centerfield for a two-run shot, scoring Mathews (walk).
After Youman walked Kratz and Gutierrez (1-for-3, 2B, 3 R, RBI) to start the seventh inning, Mathews (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB) slammed his second homer of the season, a three-run shot to right-centerfield to give the Fisher Cats an 11-2 lead.
Patterson’s first home run, a solo shot to right off reliever Joe Bisenius, began the Fisher Cats’ three-run eighth inning. Campbell (double) and Mathews (single) added RBIs in the frame.
Carpenter (1-4) served up seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught, allowing two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings to record his first career Eastern League victory. Wideman (1-3) struck out five and walked one.
Reading (13-13) scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning when on an RBI double from Lou Marson (2-for-5, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI) off Wideman and Neil Sellers’ (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) run-scoring double off reliever Kyle Yates.
John Suomi (0-for-4, RBI) and Luke Appert (1-for-3, 2 BB, RBI) also drove in runs for the Phillies.
The Fisher Cats look for their fifth win in six games when they open a three-game series at New Britain Friday night at 6:35pm with right-hander Scott Richmond (2-2, 4.23) taking the mound against Rock Cats right-hander Anthony Swarzak (2-0, 2.08).
