Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 04:54PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - AKRON , OH – Aeros left-hander David Huff was named Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today, the first Akron player to receive a weekly award this season.
“It’s great to see David off to a good start this season after missing the last half of last year,” said Aeros manager Mike Sarbaugh, who managed Huff in Kinston in 2007. “He has really worked hard and it’s obviously been paying off.”
Huff made his only start of the week Thursday morning in game one of a doubleheader in Altoona, and dominated the Curve to the tune of a magnificent three-hit shutout. The former UCLA standout struck out a pair and allowed only one walk while lowering his ERA to a league-leading 2.14 mark. Huff also leads the Akron staff with 43 strikeouts and 46.1 innings pitched this season.
His performance Thursday was the first complete-game shutout of three hits or less for the Aeros since Bear Bay threw a two-hitter against Connecticut June 9th, 2006, and Huff is the first Aero to win the Pitcher of the Week award since Reid Santos for the week of June 4th-11th of last season. A 23-year-old native of Huntington Beach, CA, Huff was the 39th overall pick in the 2006 June draft. He went 4-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts for Kinston and made the Carolina League All-Star team last season before missing the second half of the year with a left elbow strain. He was tabbed as the no.-8 prospect in the Cleveland system by Baseball America entering this year.
