Frederick Keys Lock Out Winston-Salem Warthogs, Win 8-3 - Adv A, Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - FREDERICK, MD – Frederick continued their solid play of late and Winston-Salem’s road woes mounted as the Keys handed the Warthogs an 8-3 defeat in the series opener on Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium.  Frederick has now won six of their last seven games, while the Warthogs dropped to 2-11 on the road this season.

A Brandon Tripp RBI single off Warthogs starting pitcher Matt Long gave Frederick a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Winston-Salem tied the game when Brandon Allen, who was recently named Carolina League Player of the Week, led off the second frame with a solo shot off Jake Renshaw.

The Keys regained control with three runs in the third inning on four consecutive base hits with one out.  After a Danny Figuroa single, Ryan McCarthy, who started the 2007 season with Winston-Salem before being released by the White Sox, garnered a bit of revenge against his former squad with a two-run home run.  Later in the inning, Brandon Snyder collected an RBI sacrifice to give the Keys a 4-1 lead.

The Warthogs added a run in the fourth inning when Allen tripled to start the inning and scored on a ground out by Lee Cruz.  A run scoring single by John Shelby III in the fifth trimmed the Winston-Salem deficit to one at 4-3.  The Keys answered with a run of their own in the fifth when Brandon Tripp, who finished 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, singled home Danny Figuroa.

Frederick broke the game open with runs in the seventh inning off Warthogs reliever Ricky Brooks.  Brandon Snyder singled to score a run and Billy Rowell followed with a two-run double to give the Keys an 8-3 advantage.

Renshaw (6-2) earned his league-leading 6th win by holding the Warthogs to three runs on five hits in six innings of work.  Long (2-4) took the loss for Winston-Salem after giving up five runs on seven hits in five innings.
