Peoria Chiefs Handcuff Quad Cities River Bandits for 4-3 Victory - A, Midwest League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Davenport , IA The Peoria Chiefs fell behind in the sixth but battled back to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 4-3 Wednesday night on Luis Bautista’s two-out single in the ninth. The win gives Peoria consecutive wins for just the second time all season and improves their record to 16-30.

Trailing 3-2, Nate Samson started the Chiefs ninth with a walk from lefty Matt Spade and Josh Donaldson followed with a walk of his own. Jovan Rosa singled to left to load the bases before Spade struck out Cliff Andersen. Pete Parise relieved Spade and Marquez Smith tied the game with sacrifice fly to center field. After Donaldson stole third, Luis Bautista put the Chiefs on top 4-3 with a single up the middle. Dustin Sasser (1-3) allowed a two-out single in the ninth but struck out Jose Garcia to end the game and earn the win.

The Chiefs got the bats going early in the first inning against River Bandits starter Chuckie Fick. Samson singled with one out and moved to second on a two-out single by Rosa. Cliff Andersen put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a solid single to left as Samson scored just ahead of the throw. Smith followed with another single to left and Rosa scored when the throw by left-fielder D’Marcus Ingram sailed past the Bandits catcher.

Chiefs starter Billy Muldowney kept the Bandits off balance through the first five innings, allowing just two singles while striking out four. In the sixth, with a 2-0 lead, he surrendered a lead-off single to Ingram and struck out Tommy Pham. With Ingram at second after a stolen base, Pete Kozma reached on a bloop single to center. Jordan Latham relieved Muldowney and was torched for a first-pitch 3-run home run by Charlie Kingrey as the Bandits took a 3-2 lead.

The Chiefs loaded the bases in the seventh against reliever Blake King, but as has been the case all season, failed to score. After three straight one-out walks, Andersen struck out looking and Smith popped up to third to let the Bandits off the hook.

Muldowney left with a lead for the fourth time in five starts but still does not have a decision on the season. The right-hander went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five. Latham gave up the 3-run home run and was charged with one run on three hits, a walk and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Sasser gave up a hit and struck out two in his lone inning of work.

Players of the Game – Billy Muldowney (RHP) & Luis Bautista (1B) – Muldowney pitched well enough to win and walked off the mound with a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. He struck out five and gave up four singles without issuing a walk. Muldowney took his fifth straight no-decision when the two runners he left on base scored against the bullpen. Bautista delivered a game-winning RBI for the second night in a row with his single in the ninth. He is now 10-for-24 with four extra-base hits and five RBI in five games since joining the roster from Extended Spring Training on Friday.

Notes… Jovan Rosa has a seven game hit streak…Peoria last won back-to-back games April 9-10 against Beloit and they have not won three in a row all season…The Chiefs have scored first in six of their last seven games…Andersen leads the Chiefs with 52 strikeouts in 41 games played…Peoria is 5-for-30 with the bases loaded this season…The Chiefs turned their MWL-leading 51st double play…Peoria hurlers lead the MWL with 40 home runs allowed…The Chiefs have blown four saves on this six game road trip and all six blown saves this season have been on the road…Last year the Chiefs bullpen blew seven saves all season...Latham had not allowed an inherited runner to score all season…
