Salem Avalanche Enjoy Avalanche of Runs, Top Lynchburg Hillcats 13-9
Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 08:04AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Lynchburg, VA—The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the
Houston Astros, scored nine times in the third inning Wednesday night in a
13-9 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats at City Stadium. The Avs (18-24)
sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame against the Hillcats (17-28).
Salem trailed 4-0 in the game in the second. With nobody out, Lynchburg
loaded the bases against Douglas Arguello on a combination of a single,
error and walk. The next batter, Jared Keel muscled the first pitch he
saw to right-center for a grand slam.
ADVERTISEMENT The Avalanche, though, tapped starter Brian Holliday for the nine-spot in
the third. Roberto Mena walked to lead things off. Then, Jhon Florentino
doubled to left. The next batter, Tim Torres, rolled a ball to third base
which Tony Mansolino fielded but whipped wide of the bag to score both
Mena and Florentino. The following man, Jordan Parraz, singled to center
and scored Torres. Salem then reloaded the bases on a walk and single for
Orlando Rosales. The outfielder poked a two-run single for a 6-0 lead.
Two batters later, Travis Sweet’s sacrifice fly added a run. After
Roberto Mena reached again—this time on a single, Holliday left for righty
Blair Johnson. Three batters later, Jordan Parraz socked a two-run single
to give the Avs a nine-run frame.
Lynchburg countered with a pair of runs in the third, but went quiet after
that until the ninth. Meantime, nine Salem batters were summoned to the
plate in the seventh. A Tim Torres sacrifice fly, Jordan Parraz RBI
double and Jimmy Van Ostrand two-run double scored the four runs.
The Hillcats tallied three in the ninth to finish the scoring in the game.
The 22 combined runs were the most in a Salem game in 2008. Salem tied a
season best with 16 hits in the game. Individually, Roberto Mena’s three
runs were a career high. Jordan Parraz tied a career best with four
knocked in.
The series ends Thursday at 7:05 as Salem throws right-hander Corey Bass
against Lynchburg’s Tony Watson.
