Springfield Cardinals Picture-Perfect, Take Win 2-1 from San Antonio Missions - AA, Texas League
Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 08:47AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - The Springfield Cardinals played one of their best games of the year from top to bottom, defeating the San Antonio Missions by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium in San Antonio. Tyler Herron picked up his first career Double-A win, getting some help from the Texas League’s leading hitter, who knocked in the game-winning run in the seventh.
Tied at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Shane Robinson, who entered with a league-best average of .410, ripped a two-out single to center field, plating Tyler Greene with the eventual winning run against Jon Ellis (3-3). That would be enough for the Springfield bullpen, as Jonathan Mikrut, who was just called back to Springfield from Palm Beach earlier today, fired two scoreless innings.
Mikrut handed the ball off to Fernando Salas, who struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his second save of the year. Herron was awesome, allowing just one run on four hits over six strong innings. Herron (1-2) struck out five while walking just two.
Mike Ekstrom of San Antonio was equally impressive, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings. The Cards scored the game’s first run in the sixth inning, as Steven Hill’s fielder’s choice produced Jon Jay from third base, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Herron gave up his only run in the bottom of that inning, allowing a two-out single to Mike Baxter, who drove in Brett Dowdy to tie the game at 1-1.
Springfield (19-26) has now won two straight and will send Adam Ottavino (0-4) to the mound against San Antonio right-hander Will Inman (4-1).
