Springfield Cardinals Bullpen Bolsters Team Past the San Antonio Missions, 6-4
Friday, May 23, 2008 at 04:27PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – The Springfield Cardinals got another solid bullpen effort in San Antonio and held on for a 6-4 win over the San Antonio Missions on Thursday, their third straight win.
Kyle Sadlowski, Nick Webber, Marco Gonzalez and Luke Gregerson combined to allow one run on only three hits over six innings, as the Cards move to 2-0 on their six-game road trip.
Brandon Yarbrough had three hits and drove home a key insurance run with an RBI double in the ninth.
After Yarbrough’s RBI double in the ninth made it 6-3, Luke Gregerson was brought out of the Cardinals’ bullpen to try to earn his seventh save of the year. Gregerson got the first out, but gave up three consecutive infield singles, two of which were aided by Springfield defensive break-downs. The final of the three infield singles came off the bat of Kyle Blanks, as Brett Dowdy scored to make it 6-4. Seth Johnston then flied to right field for the second out, before Craig Cooper went down swinging to end the game, leaving the tying runs on base.
Springfield got to San Antonio starter Will Inman (4-2) for four early runs. Shane Robinson walked to open the game, then after stealing his team-high tenth base, scored on Allen Craig’s RBI single, making it 1-0.
Cards’ starter Adam Ottavino, Robinson and Jon Jay all had run-scoring hits in the second, as Springfield went up 4-0.
San Antonio got to Ottavino for three runs in the bottom of the third, two of which were earned. Chad Huffman knocked in a run with an RBI double, making it 4-1. Craig Cooper brought home a run with a sac fly, making it 4-2. A throwing error allowed another run to score, as the Missions made it a one-run game at 4-3. Ottavino struck out Jose Lobaton with the tying run at third though, as San Antonio got no closer.
Springfield got a run in the fifth, as Jose Martinez singled and scored on Mark Shorey’s RBI groundout, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.
Yarbrough’s RBI double upped it to a three-run advantage, as Martinez scored to make it a 6-3 game.
Sadlowski (1-0) was credited with the win, working two scoreless frames in his Double-A debut.
Springfield (20-26) is still five games back of first place Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Looking for the sweep on Friday, the Redbirds will send Mark McCormick to the mound against San Antonio’s Stephen Faris (2-1). Game time from San Antonio on Friday will be 7:05pm.
