Potomac Nationals Win 6-3 Over Salem Avalanche, Ross Detwiler Earns Fourth Win - Carolina League
Monday, May 26, 2008 at 12:44PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WOODBRIDGE, Va.— Ross Detwiler struck out nine batters in his last start versus Wilmington and was forced to settle for a no-decision. Today, Detwiler once again struck out nine hitters but earned the win as the
Nationals defeated the Avalanche 6-3 on Sunday at Pfitzner Stadium. The
win helped Potomac salvage a series split with Salem.
It did not take long for the Nationals to generate early runs against
Salem starter Casey Hudspeth. Leonard Davis gave the Nationals an early
1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double to drive in Seth Bynum.
Potomac added to their lead in the second inning when Matt Rogelstad came
through with a two-out two-run single giving the P-Nats a 3-0 lead. Eight
of Matt Rogelstad’s 23 RBI this season have come against Salem.
Detwiler (4-2) looked un-hittable for the first two innings as he struck
out Salem batters for the first six outs of the game. The left-hander’s
six innings ensured him his third consecutive win and fourth overall this
year.
However, the Avalanche stayed persistent and was able to break through
against the 22-year-old. Jimmy Van Ostrand continued to terrorize P-Nats
pitching by driving in two runs with a double in the third inning and
cutting Potomac’s lead to 3-2. Van Ostrand has 13 RBI against the
Nationals this year. Tim Torres then completed the comeback in the fifth
with a sacrifice fly.
Detwiler would not have been in line for the win had his offense not come
through in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the game tied 3-3, Potomac
stormed ahead with three runs thanks to a major break and clutch hitting.
Salem first baseman Mark Ori let Davis’ ground ball go right under his
legs for an error helping start the rally. After a walk to Edgardo Baez,
Dee Brown capped off a 2-3 day by putting the Nationals ahead for good
with an RBI single. Potomac tacked on two more runs for a 6-3 lead thanks
to two sacrifice flies to right field.
Reliever Clint Everts pitched the final three innings with four punch outs
for Potomac earning his second save of the season. Everts was effective
throwing strikes while he retired the final nine hitters he faced. Everts
and Detwiler combined to strike out 13 Avalanche hitters on the afternoon.
