Potomac Nationals Use Big Inning to Get Past the Frederick Keys 6-4

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – WOODBRIDGE, Va.— The Potomac Nationals have struggled scoring runs of late, but all was forgotten Friday night thanks to the long ball courtesy of Chris Marrero and Seth Bynum. Both players homered to fuel a five-run
inning as Potomac beat Frederick 6-4 for their fifth consecutive victory.

Leonard Davis got the Nationals on the board early in the bottom of the
first inning launching his team-leading fifth home run over the left field
wall for a 1-0 lead.
The fortune though, quickly turned against Potomac with starter Jhonny
Nunez lasting two innings due to a high pitch count. The right-hander’s
first win of the season continues to elude him as he threw 40 pitches in
the second inning allowing two runs on two doubles and two walks.
Clint Everts made his first Potomac appearance of the season, relieving
Nunez to open the top of the third. Despite giving up three consecutive
singles and a walk, Everts allowed just one run in the inning. The
right-hander lasted three frames allowing two runs, one earned on four
hits.
With the Nationals trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the
SeatSub Challenge 2008 Contest offense erupted. Davis and Frank Diaz led off with singles and Marrero
connected for an opposite-field home run off of Frederick starter Brandon
Erbe (3-2) to tie the game at 4-4. The homer was Marrero’s third of the
season and his first since April 11 against Kinston.
Then, with two outs, Bynum capped off the comeback with his second home
run of the season, a two-run shot to right field giving the Nationals a
6-4 lead. The RBI were the 13th and 14th of the year for Bynum. It was the
first time all season that the Nationals have hit multiple home runs in
the same inning.
Nationals’ reliever Yunior Novoa (2-0) kept the Keys bats silent with his
three innings of relief, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced and
limiting the Keys to just one hit. The left-hander struck out four hitters
en route to his second win of the season.
Adam Carr earned his second save of the season getting Orioles’ 2007
first-round draft choice Matt Wieters, who represented the tying run, to
ground out to end the game.
The Nationals and Keys will play game three of their four-game series
tomorrow at Pfitzner Stadium. Pedro Beato, who was recently activated from
the temporary inactive list is scheduled to start for the Keys. Potomac
has yet to announce its starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
