Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 11:15AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Modesto - 3 Stockton - 5 Box Score attached. - STOCKTON , Calif . - Coming off a seven game road trip where they went 6-1, the Stockton Ports were looking to head into a six game homestand with a head of steam. They did just that on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. With Trevor Cahill (4-0) on the hill, the Ports won their second straight game, and their 18th in their last 24, beating the rival Modesto Nuts by a final of 5-3. With the win, the Ports maintain their two game lead on the San Jose Giants for first place in the North Division.
Stockton drew first blood in the first inning. Following a one out walk to Josh Horton, Sean Doolittle followed with a single to right, and Chris Carter knocked an RBI single to left to give Stockton a 1-0 lead.
The Ports followed with their biggest inning of the night in the second against Nuts starter Keith Weiser (2-3). Jermaine Mitchell led off with an infield single up the first base line. Two batters and two outs later, Matt Sulentic delivered a clutch two-out double to right to make it 2-0. Archie Gilbert came up next, and extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an RBI single to right, giving the Ports a 3-0 advantage.

Weiser gave up his final run in the third, when Doolittle brought home Horton with an RBI double to make it 4-0. Weiser after allowing runs in the first three innings, settled down and tossed three scoreless to finish his night. He still wound up with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
Meanwhile, Cahill seemed to pick up right where he left off following his 12 strikeout performance on Sunday in Rancho Cucamonga . Cahill faced the minimum through 5.1 innings. With one out in the sixth, however, he hit a bit of a wall. Nelson Robledo worked a walk, and on a 1-2 pitch, Jason Van Kooten was hit on the shoulder, putting runners at first and second with one out. Anthony Jackson made Cahill pay with an RBI single to right--the first hit of the night for Modesto --bringing home Robledo and making it 4-1. After a strikeout of Daniel Mayora, Mike Paulk walked and Cole Garner knocked a two-run single to right, pulling the Nuts to within a run at 4-3.
Cahill struck out Michael McKenry to end the sixth and end his night, preserving the 4-3 score. Cahill would earn his fourth win, going six innings and allowing three runs on two hits, walking two, hitting two and striking out nine. Cahill is still the league leader in strikeouts with 48 on the season.
With the Ports still clinging to a one run lead, Carter led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run off Nuts reliever David Patton to extend the lead to 5-3. The homer was Carter’s ninth on the season, extending his league lead in that category.
Arnold Leon (SV, 1) came on in the eighth following a scoreless seventh from Derrick Gordon. Leon tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season, surviving a Modesto rally as the Nuts put the tying runners aboard in the ninth. Leon struck out three batters in his two innings, including Jackson to end the game.
