Wilmington Blue Rocks Throw Off Winston-Salem Warthogs for 11-3 Annihilation - Adv A, Carolina League
Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 12:08PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wilmington Blue Rocks scored early and often as they routed Winston-Salem 11-3 on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Blue Rocks tallied 15 hits and scored at least one run in six of the nine innings to even up this four-game series at a game apiece. The runs and hits allowed and the margin of defeat were the most allowed by Winston-Salem this season.
The Blue Rocks took an early 1-0 lead against Warthogs starting pitcher Jacob Rasner, when Jarrod Dyson lined an RBI single to score Matt Morizio with the game’s first run. An RBI fielder’s choice by Dyson in the third inning extended the Blue Rocks lead to two. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Derrick Robinson stole second base and an error by Warthogs second baseman Javier Colina allowed Jarrod Dyson to score from third giving Wilmington a 3-2 lead.
Winston-Salem put a pair of runs on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Colina and a sac fly by Salvador Sanchez to cut their deficit to 3-2. That would be as close as the Warthogs would get as Wilmington pasted Winston-Salem reliever Noe Rodriguez for four runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-2.
Wilmington added a pair of runs off Warthogs reliever Matt Davis when Anthony Seratlli blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning and Robinson laced a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Blue Rocks a 9-2 advantage. The Warthogs picked up a run on an RBI ground out by Billy Killian in the seventh inning, but Wilmington answered right back on a two-run double by David Wood in the eighth inning to finalize the scoring.
Holland (2-1), a North Carolina native, was stellar in his return to his home state as he collected career-highs with 6 2/3 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts. He limited the Warthogs to three runs on five hits to earn the win. Rasner (2-2) suffered his second consecutive poor outing against Wilmington, lasting just four innings and surrendering three runs on six hit with five walks.
