Frederick Keys Catcher Matt Wieters Receives Baltimore Orioles Player of the Month Honor for April - Carolina League
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 02:22PM Wieters was drafted fifth overall in last June’s draft and signed to late to make his professional debut. On opening night his career got off to a rousing start when Wieters homered twice in a 7-3 victory over Lynchburg. He was honored as the first Carolina League Player of the Week after batting .524 (11-21) with three home runs out of the gate in 2008.
In his collegiate days at Georgia Tech, Wieters joined major leaguers Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Varitek as the third Yellow Jacket in program history to be a two-time First-Team All American. He is the first Yellow Jacket to be drafted in the top-5 since Mark Teixeira was selected by the Texas Rangers with the fifth pick of the 2001 draft.
Bowie Baysox pitcher Chris Waters won Pitcher of the Month in the Orioles organization for April dominating the Double-A Eastern League with a 5-0 record and a 1.69 ERA in six starts in the month.
