Ernesto Mejia of Myrtle Beach Pelicans Named Carolina League Player of the Week

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Fittingly, Pelicans’ first baseman Ernesto Mejia (pronounced May-Hee-Uh) has been named the first Carolina League Player of Week for the month of May (April 28th – May 4th).  The 22-year old Venezuelan native turned in a historic stretch over the course of the Pelicans recently completed seven-game road trip.  During the calendar week, Mejia batted .483 (14-29) with three home runs, six doubles, a triple, 11 RBIs and eight runs scored.
 
Included was a 3-for-4 night against Salem on May 3rd, in which Mejia clubbed a double and a home run while matching the franchise record for RBIs in a single game with six.  He is currently riding a season-high seven-game hit streak encompassing the past week.  He is also currently in the midst of a team-best ten-game road hitting streak (.439, 18-41, 4 HR, 13 RBI).  His recent offensive explosion has raised his season average to .268 with four home runs and 20 MLNGirlsFeb2008_Lisa.jpg

RBIs.  The 20 runs batted in place him in a tie for 2nd in the Carolina League with teammate Travis Jones and Lynchburg’s Jim Negrych.
 
Signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent on July 8, 2002, Mejia split the 2007 season between Rome (A) and Danville (R).  With Danville, he posted a .339 batting average with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 29 games.  Following a promotion to Rome (A), he hit .307 over 36 games with four home runs and 24 RBIs.
 
Mejia continues a stretch of four-consecutive weeks that a Pelicans has claimed either Carolina League Pitcher or Player of the Week honors.  SS Brandon Hicks was named Player of the Week in week three of the season, while RHP Tommy Hanson claimed Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors in each of the first two weeks of the season.
