Oklahoma RedHawks Rally Late to Sink the Sacramento River Cats 5-3
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 05:32PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – HIGHLIGHTS: The Oklahoma RedHawks rallied to beat the Sacramento River Cats 5-3 Tuesday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks scored the game's final four runs over the final five innings to make Doug Mathis the first five-game winner in the Pacific Coast League.
The River Cats struck first with a pair of runs off Mathis in the top of the second inning. Oklahoma answered when Kevin Richardson halved the deficit by doubling in Nate Gold in the home half of the inning. Sacramento plated its final run in the top of the fourth, and from there Mathis and the offense took control. Richardson hit his third home run of the season in the fifth inning to bring the RedHawks within one at 3-2 and John Mayberry tied the game with a run-scoring double in the sixth. Oklahoma would tag reliever Jeff Gray for a pair of runs in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference. Nelson Cruz legged out a leadoff double, and advanced to third on an infield groundout by Gold. Cruz would score on a fly-ball base hit by Kevin Mench, and Mench would subsequently score of a triple by Mayberry, now hitting .500 after eight games this season for Oklahoma.
The final 16 River Cats were set down in order, including 13 straight by Mathis (5-0) and three by Yukinaga Maeda, who pitched a perfect ninth for his first save in the United States. Richardson notched his first three-hit game this season to pace the offense, while Jason Ellison, Mench, and Mayberry each knocked two hits to help Oklahoma snap a brief two-game losing streak.Oklahoma and Sacramento play early on Wednesday with and 11:05 am Field Trip Day at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
