The Quakes got off to a fast start in the first game of a three game set against their Interstate-10 rival Inland Empire 66ers. After Rancho starter David Herndon allowed a run on some sub-par defense, the Quakes scored in the home half of the first on a Howie Kendrick solo home run to right center to the game 1-1.
Rancho got two more runs in the bottom of the second on Brian Walker’s fourth home run of the season and, after a double by Wil Ortiz, he came around to score on a Larry Infante sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead.
The Quakes would continue to pile on the runs on another solo homer by Kendrick in the third and, in the fifth, after a Kendrick single, he stole second and ended up scoring on a pair of errors by the 66ers to take a 5-1 lead.
In the sixth, after two straight singles to lead off the inning by Drew Toussaint and Infante to knock out 66ers starter Tim Sexton, PJ Phillips sacrificed the runners to second and third and Peter Bourjos singled passed a drawn in infield to score two runs and take a 7-1 lead.
Herndon would allow a run in the seventh with two outs to snap a streak of 13 in a row retired by the right hander. Herndon went seven innings and allowed just two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out a career high eight on his way to his second win of the season.
In the bottom of the eighth, Rancho added two more runs for good measure after a Phillips two-out single, Bourjos hammered his first home run of the season to make it 9-2.
