Winston-Salem Warthogs Rise Above Lynchburg Hillcats 8-1

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem starting pitcher Aaron Poreda was dominant and two big offensive innings carried the Warthogs to an 8-1 victory over Lynchburg on Tuesday night at Calvin Falwell Field.  The win snapped Winston-Salem’s seven-game road losing streak as they improved to 2-9 on the road this season.

Poreda (2-2), the first round pick of the White Sox in 2007, kept the Hillcats hitless until Albert Laboy led off the sixth inning with a solo home run.  It would be the only blemish for the southpaw, as he tossed seven innings and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in registering his second consecutive win.

The Warthogs first big inning came in the fourth when Brandon Allen led off with a single and stole second base.  After a ground out moved Allen to third, Lee Cruz laced an RBI single thru a drawn-in infield to score Allen.  An error on a C.J. Retherford grounder and a single by Francisco Hernandez loaded the bases with one out.  A passed ball by Hillcats starting pitcher Jared Hughes allowed Cruz to score the Warthogs second run.

Sergio Miranda contributed an RBI sacrifice fly and John Shelby III belted a two-run double to center field to plate the final runs of the inning to give Winston-Salem a 5-0 lead.  The Warthogs added three more runs in the fifth inning when Retherford crushed a two-run double and Miranda tallied another RBI sac fly to put Winston-Salem in front 8-0.

Hughes (1-4) only lasted four innings and surrendered five runs on five hits with three walks to take the loss for Lynchburg.  Warthog’s reliever Matt Davis tossed two perfect innings to finish off the masterpiece started by Poreda.
