Corpus Christi Hooks Narrowly Escape the Frisco RoughRiders with 2-1 Win
MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – CORPUS CHRISTI -- Second baseman Drew Sutton ripped a game-winning RBI triple and scored Corpus Christi’s first run as the Hooks defeated Frisco 2-1 Wednesday before 7,158.
Corpus Christi is 19-14, 3 ½ games behind the 22-10 RoughRiders in the Texas League South.
For the fifth straight game, Corpus Christi fell behind in the first inning. Elvis Andrus drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on an errant pick-off attempt and moved home on Max Ramirez’ single to left.
The Hooks responded immediately with a run of their own. Sutton stroked a lead-off double and scored an out later when Mitch Einertson grounded to short.
Hooks left fielder Ray Sadler kept the RoughRiders off the board in the second by throwing out Dustin Majewski at the plate. Majewski was attempting to score from second on Emerson Frostad’s hit after doubling with two out.
Sadler and shortstop Tommy Manzella threw would-be run scorers out in the fifth. Sadler nailed Thomas Berkery as he sought the plate on Craig Gentry’s double. With the Hooks infield drawn in, Manzella fielded Andrus’ hot grounder and gunned Gentry.
Corpus Christi then took a 2-1 lead on Rob Cosby’s lead-off single and a two-out triple into the right-field corner by Sutton.
Hooks starter Sergio Perez (1-0), making his season and Double-A debut after a stay at extended spring training (groin injury), threw 79 pitches over five innings. He permitted eight hits, an unearned run and one walk while striking out four.
Chris Blazek (1 1/3 innings), Ryan McKeller (1 2/3) and Sammy Gervacio (1) combined for four frames of scoreless relief and six strikeouts. Gervacio notched his second save.
Michael Schlact (1-2) worked the first seven innings for Frisco. Schlact allowed five hits, walked one and fanned three.
Southpaw Matt Harrison (1-1) faces Corpus Christi’s Bud Norris (3-0) Thursday at 7:05.
