Lancaster JetHawks Make Dramatic Comeback Against High Desert Mavericks in 6-4 Win
Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 01:29PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – (LANCASTER, CA) – Fans at Clear Channel Stadium Wednesday saw a little bit of everything. Clutch hitting and clutch pitching. Great defense and costly errors. Close calls, arguments, and ejections. And most importantly, they saw a big Lancaster rally. Down most of the night, the JetHawks scored four times with two outs in the eighth inning, and then escaped a bases-loaded situation in the ninth to beat High Desert 6-4. Lancaster (15-18) has now won four of their last five games. They have caught the Mavericks for a second-place tie and improved to just two games behind first place Lake Elsinore.
The game was low scoring early thanks to the efforts of Lancaster’s Tony Bajoczky and High Desert’s Nick Hill. High Desert took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and seemed to have an answer each time Lancaster got on the score board. The Mavericks were up 4-2 going into the fateful bottom of the eighth inning.
The rally took place entirely with two outs. Zak Farkes and Jorge Jimenez both singled. Mavericks right-fielder Carlos Peguero failed to handle Jimenez’ hit and let the ball roll to the wall, allowing both runs to score and tying the game. Jason Place then hit a ground-rule double over the right field wall and Aaron Reza tripled him home to put Lancaster in the lead for the first time. They would add another insurance run on a second Mavericks error.
T.J. Large, becoming the first JetHawks pitcher to work on back-to-back nights, saw the bases loaded with one out in the ninth inning. However, he struck out Travis Scott, who argued the call and was ejected, and Greg Halman to close the win and get his fourth save.
Reza had a huge game for Lancaster. He finished with three hits, all for extra bases and including the game winner. Dennis Blackmon, who entered the game in the first inning for an injured Jon Still, had two hits, as did Reid Engel. Jason Blackey picked up his first win of the season after an inning of relief work.
