Peoria Chiefs Score Early, Often Against the Cedar Rapids Kernals in 13-7 Thrashing

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Cedar Rapids, IA – The Peoria Chiefs scored 11 times in the first three innings and scored a season high in runs while beating the Cedar Rapids Kernels 13-7 Wednesday afternoon. The win gives the Chiefs just their second series win of the year and moves them to 12-20 on the season.

A wild first inning resulted in both teams scoring four times. Jose Made started the game for the Chiefs with a four pitch walk and Nate Samson was hit by a pitch. Marquez Smith doubled home Made and Jovan Rosa doubled home two for a 3-0 Chiefs lead.

After a pair of outs, Elvis Lara drove Rosa home with a single to center and Chris Siegfried was staked to a 4-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids answered in an error-filled bottom of the first to tie the game. Clay Fuller led off with a double and moved to third with Made dropped a pickoff throw. Andrew Romine reached on an error by Samson as Fuller scored to cut the lead to 4-1.

With two runners on, Gordie Gronkowski singled home a run and Luis Perez followed with a two-out RBI. Chirs Rosenbaum delivered a single to right to tie the game and after an error by Kyler Burke, Rosenbaum became the second Kernel lost on the basepaths in the inning when he was tagged out at second base.

The Chiefs came right back with a two-out rally against Robert Fish in the second. Samson singled up the middle and Fish walked Smith on a full-count pitch. Rosa delivered his second two-run double of the game to put the Chiefs back on top 6-4.

Peoria slammed Fish for five more in the third. Burke was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Lara walked with one out. Cliff Andersen singled to load the bases and Cedar Rapids made two error on the same play as the Chiefs lead grew to 8-4. Samson drove home Andersen and Made with a double and then scored on a grounder by Smith for an 11-4 lead.

Cedar Rapids scored a pair against Siegfried in the fifth. Fuller and Romine led off with back-to-back singles and Brossman drove home a run with a groundout. Pinchhitter Cody Collet made it 11-6 with a single to center.

The Kernels finally went to the bullpen to start the sixth as Esmerlin Jimenez relieved Fish. Burke greeted Jimenez with a first-pitch homer over the wall in right for a 12-6 Peoria advantage. The Chiefs loaded the bases but didn’t score another run in the inning. Cedar Rapids used a walk, single and wild pitch to get the lead back to five in the bottom of the seventh against Blake Parker. Peoria capped the scoring with a RBI double by Burke in the eighth.

Siegfried picked up his first win of the season despite allowing a career-high 10 hits. Five of the runs against him were earned in five innings as Siegfried walked two and struck out one. Parker gave up one run on two hits while striking out three in two innings of work. Dustin Sasser walked one but didn’t allow a hit or a run in his lone inning of work.

Player of the Game – Jovan Rosa (1B) – Rosa doubled home a pair in each of his first two at-bats and finished with a career high four RBI. He leads the team with 11 doubles and is tied for the team lead with 13 RBI. Rosa finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Notes… Burke’s homer extends his hit streak to eight games… Elvis Lara has hit safely in six straight and reached base in all seven games he has played…Peoria scored 13 runs in a game for the first time since August 10, 2007 when they beat Great Lakes 14-4 at O’Brien Field…The Chiefs had four players hit by a pitch…Peoria was 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position…Leon Johnson missed his second straight game with lower back spasms…The Chiefs are 4-6 in the final game of a series and now 2-6-2 in 10 series this season…Peoria is 2-7 this season when the opposing team starts a lefthanded pitcher, however the team hits better (.241 to .228) against lefties…The Chiefs are 4-5 in day games this season, 2-1 on the road…Peoria now heads to Clinton for a four game weekend series to complete the 10-game road trip…The Chiefs will send RH Alberto Cabrera (1-3, 4.97) to the hill Thursday at 7:00 PM against RH Jorge Quintero (2-0, 3.31) …The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
