Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 02:14PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Tennessee and Chattanooga battled back-and-forth throughout Wednesday’s matinee game, but two big rallies in the latter portion of the game enabled the Smokies to come away with a victory, 15-7.
Tennessee got on the board early with a Steve Clevenger two-RBI double in the first frame. The Lookouts, however, countered in the second with a Craig Tatum double, which brought home Tonys Gutierrez.
The Lookouts added another two runs in the third to take the lead. A Daryl Thompson double and Shaun Cumberland walk prefaced a trio of singles from Drew Anderson, Michael Griffin, and Craig Tatum.
The Smokies took back the lead in the fifth off of a Matt Matulia solo shot and Nate Spears sac fly.
Mimicking prior trends of lead-swapping, the Lookouts added three runs in the fifth on a Jerry Gil three-run shot. A Cody Strait solo shot in the sixth gave the Lookouts a 7-4 advantage.
ADVERTISEMENT Tennessee would reclaim the lead in the seventh by scoring five runs. Two walks, two singles, and an error fueled the Smokies’ rally.
Already with a 10-7 lead, the Smokies added six more runs in the ninth with a similar minimalistic approach as their seventh inning performance. Nate Spears hit a two-run single to highlight the inning’s efforts.
Matt Avery (1-0) earned the win for the Smokies in relief, despite yielding four runs in three innings.
