Winston-Salem Warthogs is Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, White Sox Third-Rounder has 72 Ks this Season - Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem pitcher John Ely was recognized as the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for June 9-15. Ely, the third round draft pick of the White Sox in 2007 out of Miami (OH) University, pitched seven shutout innings for the Warthogs on June 12 in Wilmington.  He allowed just one hit and collected eight strikeouts without walking a batter in a 1-0 Warthogs victory.

With the win, the Homewood, Ill. native improved to 3-6 on the season with a 3.66 ERA.  The right-hander has tallied 72 strikeouts, which ranks first on the team and third in the league.

It was the first weekly award for Ely this season, and the first for a Warthogs player since Brandon Allen and Aaron Poreda swept the Carolina League honors in mid-May. Ely will look to continue his success as Winston-Salem hosts the Potomac Nationals for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
