Great Lakes Loons Lose Longest Game in Franchise History 8-7 to the Dayton Dragons

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –  DAYTON, OH – Brandon Waring’s solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning capped the longest game in Great Lakes Loons’ history Thursday night, sending the Dayton Dragons to an 8-7 victory.

The 13 innings played and 4 hour, 45 minute game time are both franchise records.

Waring’s homer was his 13th of the season.  The Dragons’ third baseman competed in the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game and Home Run Derby, powered by Dow Corning, earlier this week at Dow Diamond.  His blast came against Miguel Sanfler (1-3), who was charged with the loss.

Thomas Melgarejo (3 2/3 innings) and Matt Sartor (3 1/3) combined on seven innings of scoreless relief between the sixth and 12th innings.  Sartor did not allow any hits and struck out six.

Jaime Ortiz hit a three-run homer in the top of the first to put the Loons on the board early in the game.  The Dragons’ big inning was the third, when they struck for five runs against starter Justin Miller.

SeatSub Challenge 2008 Contest Trailing by two, the Loons tied the game at seven with a pair of sixth inning runs.  Kenley Jansen doubled to score newcomer Francisco Lizarraga to pull the Loons to within one.  Then Jovanny Rosario singled home Jansen to tie the game at seven.  The score would remain the same until Waring’s extra innings heroics.

Ortiz drove in four runs and had three hits.  Andrew Lambo also had three hits, and he scored three runs.

The game-winning homer capped an impressive evening for Waring in which he was on base in six of his seven plate appearances (three hits, three walks).

The Loons continue their four game series against the Dragons Friday from Fifth Third Field.  Game time is 7:00pm ET.  The game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN), the Loons’ flagship radio home.  Left-hander Victor Garate is scheduled to start for the Loons.
