Jacksonville Suns Take 8-5 Victory Over the Birmingham Barons, Marlon Arias Goes Six Strong
Friday, June 20, 2008 at 12:52PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – HOOVER, Ala. – A five-run third inning combined with six solid innings from starter Marlon Arias led the Jacksonville Suns (35-38, 2-1) to an 8-5 Thursday night victory over the Birmingham Barons (41-32, 1-2) in front of 6,332 at Regions Park.
The Suns lead the current six-game series two games to one while the Barons lead in the season series is down to seven games to six.
Jacksonville opened the scoring against Birmingham starter Dewon Day in the first inning when Lucas May singled home Ivan DeJesus, Jr. and Jamie Hoffmann with two out for a 2-0 lead. The Barons answered in the second inning when Stefan Gartrell smashed a solo homerun off of Suns starter Marlon Arias, cutting the Suns lead to 2-1.
The Suns extended their lead in the third inning, after running Day from the game after back-to-back walks started the inning. Ryan O’Malley entered for Birmingham and issued a walk to load the bases before giving up back-to-back two-run doubles from Russell Mitchell and Juan Gonzalez to open a 6-1 Suns lead. Adam Godwin later doubled home Gonzalez for a 7-1 advantage.
ADVERTISEMENT Birmingham’s Miguel Negron smashed a two-run homerun off Arias in the fifth inning to cut the Suns lead to 7-3.
Arias left after allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in six innings of work.
The teams traded eighth inning runs, as Jamie Hoffmann’s RBI single in the top half opened an 8-3 lead. Robert Hudson singled home a run for Birmingham in the bottom of the inning for an 8-4 score. With two on and two out, Micah Schnurstein blasted a high fly ball near the fair pole in left field that was originally ruled a homerun, which cut the Suns lead to 8-7. After an argument by the Suns staff, the umpiring crew deliberated and overturned the call with a foul ball ruling. The change led to the ejection of Barons manager Carlos Subero for the second consecutive game. Schnurstein later struck out to end the inning and was ejected after throwing his bat and helmet.
The Barons mounted a rally in the ninth inning against reliever Zach Hammes, with a Victor Mercedes single scoring Noah Hall for an 8-5 score. The next three batters, all three representing the tying run, went down in order to end the game.
Marlon Arias (7-3) picked up the win for the Suns while Dewon Day (0-1) fell in the loss for the Barons.
Suns RH Jesus Castillo will face Barons LH Aaron Poreda Friday at 8:05 p.m. ET at Regions Park. Live radio coverage is available in Jacksonville on WFXJ-AM 930 or online at jaxsuns.com.
