State College Spikes Defeat Auburn Doubledays 9-5

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - AUBURN, NY – The State College Spikes jumped ahead with a three-run first inning Thursday night at Falcon Park and never looked back, as they defeated the Auburn Doubledays 9-5.

Each hitter in the Spikes’ lineup reached base at least once and eight of
the nine crossed the plate.  Nine runs also marks the most runs the Spikes
have scored so far this season.

Kyle McPherson (1-0) went the distance on the mound and earned the win for
the Spikes, pitching six innings.  The right-hander gave up only four hits
and one run, while striking out three.  Ryan Kelly followed, with three

innings of relief, and earned his first save of the season.

The Spikes sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning.  Matt
Payne and Ciro Rosero reached base to lead off the inning and scored on a
Butch Biela single and a Calvin Anderson double to give the Spikes a two
run lead.  Biela added another run, after scoring on a Chase d’Arnaud
 fielder’s choice.

In the sixth inning, the Spikes tacked three more runs on the board when
Mark Carver hit in d’Arnaud, who reached base on a triple.  Both Cole
White and David Rubinstein scored on a Chad Rice single to right field.

The eighth inning turned into another three-run inning for the Spikes
after Carver and Rubinstein produced back-to-back doubles.  Both would
score on a Payne single to right field.  Rice contributed an additional
run, scoring on a Rosero sacrifice fly, after being intentionally walked.

The Doubledays (6-4) answered back with a three-run eighth inning of there
own, which included a David Cooper two-run home run.  Auburn loaded the
bases in the bottom of the ninth, but the Spikes allowed only one run to
cross the plate, ending the game with a double play and strike out.

Biela, Carver and Payne all had two hits on the night, in addition to
scoring one run each.  White saw his first professional plate appearances,
 reaching base twice on walks.

Castillo Perez (0-1) took the loss for the Doubledays.  The right-hander
pitched four innings, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks.
