Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 04:29PM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Midwest League announced Monday that Peoria’s Marquez Smith was named the MWL Offensive Player of the Week. From May 26-June 1, Smith hit .429 with three home runs, two doubles, five RBI, six runs scored and a .952 slugging percentage.
Smith started the week with a Memorial Day double against Wisconsin and capped it with a double and a home run in Sunday’s 6-4 win at Wisconsin. In between, he homered twice and drove in four runs as the Chiefs took three of four from Cedar Rapids. Smith saw his 10-game hitting streak end in Saturday’s second game of a double header, but he still collected nine hits in 21 at-bats in the six games last week. The second and third baseman has four home runs in his last nine games, with three coming during the May 26-June 1 time frame. Smith hit .317 in May with five home runs and a .554 slugging percentage. Overall on the season, the 23-year-old is hitting .277 with seven home runs, 26 RBI, 15 doubles, three triples and a .495 slugging percentage.
The last Chiefs player to be named MWL Offensive Player of the Week was Eric Patterson in 2005. Patterson won the award twice that season, April 7-17 and July 18-24. Aaron Sisk was also named Offensive Player of the Week in 2005 from May 23-29. On the pitching side, current Chiefs right-hander Robert Hernandez was named MWL Pitcher of the week last season for the June 4-11 period.
