Rancho Cucamonga Quakes Top High Desert Mavericks 6-4 - Advanced A, California League
Monday, June 30, 2008 at 09:43AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - RANCHO CUCAMONGA - In a back-and-forth game at the Epicenter, the Quakes outlasted the High Desert Mavericks 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Quakes win the series against the Mavericks and improve their second half record to 6-4.
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead against Michael Anton and the Quakes in the top of the second inning capitalizing on an error by left fielder Anthony Norman and three singles. Jamie McOwen continued his hot hitting with a leadoff single followed by a Carlos Triunfel infield single scoring McOwen from third. Leury Bonilla then singled home Travis Scott who had reached on Norman’s two base fielding error in left.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth Abel Nieves came through with a two-run to center off of Julio Santiago tying the game at 2-2.

ADVERTISEMENT Mark Trumbo gave the Quakes a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a lead-off homer to left-center field off of Brad Reid who was making his Maverick debut. Trumbo’s homer was his third of the series and 20th of the season tying him with Stockton Ports Chris Carter for the California League lead.
The lead didn’t last for long though as High Desert came back with two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Ogui Diaz and an RBI triple by Kuo Hoi Lo off of Quakes reliever Trever Bell.
Rancho came right back in the bottom of the seventh against Maverick reliever Austin Bibens-Dirkz (1-1) scoring two runs. Mark Trumbo singled to left scoring Abel Nieves who reached on a double. Peter Bourjos scored the go-ahead run on a line drive single by P.J. Phillips which gave the Quakes a 5-4 lead.
The Quakes got an un-earned insurance run in the eighth building the lead to 6-4. After Carlos Colmenares reached base on an error by Mavericks catcher Travis Scott, Abel Nieves came through yet again with an RBI single to left scoring Colmenares. Nieves finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI’s. The heart of the Quakes lineup, Nieves, Bourjos and Trumbo combined to go 7-for-13 in the game with five RBI’s.
David Herndon came in to pitch a perfect ninth getting the save. Trevor Bell (6-6) pitched two innings to get the win after a solid start by Michael Anton who pitched six innings while only allowing two runs, one earned.
Kelvim Escobar will get the start for the Quakes in his first rehab assignment and Tommy Mendoza (3-9, 4.47 ERA) will follow on Monday at 7:05 in the first of a four-game series against the Inland Empire 66ERS.
