MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Kyle Cofield continued his recent dominance on the mound as he guided Myrtle Beach to a 4-1 win over the Warthogs on Thursday night as the Pelicans swept the four-game series over Winston-Salem. Cofield (3-4) tossed seven shutout innings while limiting the Warthogs to two hits with four strikeouts. In his last five starts, the right-hander has worked 27 2/3 innings while allowing just one earned run to lower his ERA to 2.56.
Warthogs starting pitcher Anthony Carter (0-1), who was making his Carolina League debut, got off to a slow start as Eric Campbell smacked a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Pelicans the early lead. Myrtle Beach tacked on a run in the third inning as Campbell brought another run across on a ground out.
Winston-Salem finally put a run on the board in the eighth inning against reliever Jeff Lyman. C.J. Lang reached on an infield single and Paulo Orlando tripled to cut the Pelicans lead to 4-1. It was Orlando’s seventh triple of the season, which ties him with Joe Dickerson of Wilmington for the league lead.
Carter, who became the 11th different starting pitcher for Winston-Salem this season, took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work. Lyman worked the final two innings and held the Warthogs to a run on three hits to garner his first save of the season.
The Warthogs will return home to open a three-game series against the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. Winston will start RHP Matt Long in the opener, while Frederick is expected to start RHP Brandon Erbe. The first pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m.
