Connecticut Defenders cannot Connect with Altoona Curve who Win 1-0 in 10th - AA, Eastern League
Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 09:26AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - ALTOONA - Yoslan Herrera turned in arguably his best performance in his Curve career, tossing eight scoreless innings which helped set the stage for extra inning heroics and a 1-0 Curve win over the Connecticut Defenders on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark .
Herrera allowed just four hits and did not walk en route to notching a season-high six batters in the best performance by a Curve hurler this year.
Shelby Ford provided the game-winning base hit in the bottom of the tenth to score Luis Cruz which sent the Curve to their ninth win in the last 11 games.
With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Cruz hit a ground ball that went under the glove of Connecticut shortstop Jake Wald. A walk to pinch-hitter Pedro Powell pushed Cruz to second to get him into scoring position for Ford's big hit. Ford (2-for-4) owned two of the Curve's four total hits in the contest.
After Herrera left the game, Evan Meek (1-1) came on to toss a pair of scoreless innings of relief and secure the first win of his Curve career.
Joey Martinez pitched well for Connecticut (26-33), as the right-hander scattered just three hits over seven scoreless innings. Steve Palazzolo came on to pitch 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Defenders before the Curve scored in the tenth.
