Omaha Royals Cannot Cling to One-Run Lead Against Memphis Redbirds in 3-1 Loss

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis rallied by Omaha late with two runs in the eighth inning to beat the Royals 3-1 Friday night at AutoZone Park.

With two outs and the bases loaded in a 1-1 game D’Angelo Jimenez delivered his third hit of the night to score two runs and put the ‘Birds on top. The inning started with Royals reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta walking two of the first batters he faced and Rico Washington’s single to load the bases. Jimenez finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Washington drove in the Redbirds first run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.

Memphis starter P.J. Walters was sharp over eight innings to earn his team-best seventh win of the year. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Only Gookie Dawkins solo home run in the fifth frame blemished Walters’ night. Kelvin Jimenez pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down his 10th save. Yabuta was pegged with the loss for Omaha surrendering two runs on two hits in the eighth inning. Starter Matt Wright’s outing was wasted after the right-hander gave up one run on four hits in seven innings.

The ‘Birds and Royals have a day-night doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow with the first game beginning at 12:05 p.m. and the nightcap at 6:05 p.m. Following the first game will be Conversations with History: Memories of the Negro Leagues a symposium with former Negro League players. The symposium will be held in the Toyota Center next to AutoZone Park. In the night game the teams will wear throwback uniforms. The Redbirds will don the Memphis Red Sox uniforms and the Royals will wear Homestead Grays uniforms.
