Peoria Chiefs Skipper Ryne Sandberg Will Miss July 16 Game to Attend Dinner at the White House

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs have announced that manager Ryne Sandberg is one of 13 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame invited to attend a dinner at the White House on July 16.  Because of the invitation, Sandberg will not be available to manage the Chiefs game at O’Brien Field against Lansing on the 16th.

The 13 baseball stars and their families have the opportunity to dine with President George W. Bush and 150 other Major League Baseball executives and their families.  A private reception for 300 will follow in the Rose Garden to celebrate baseball.

The invitation will extend Sandberg’s time away from the Chiefs as his trip to Yankee Stadium for the MLB All-Star game will take place on Tuesday, July 15.  Prior to the All-Star game, a ceremony will take place featuring the largest gathering of baseball stars in history, including Sandberg, as a gesture to the history of Yankee Stadium during its last year.  The group will also be honored with the opportunity to take part in the Red Carpet Parade along Sixth Avenue in Manhattan on Tuesday before the game.

The Chiefs will be completing their three-game series at West Michigan from July 12-14.  After an off day on the 15th, they will return to Peoria for a six-game homestand with three games against Lansing and three against Great Lakes.  Sandberg will be absent for both the July 14th game against the Whitecaps and the July 16th game against Lansing.  Hitting coach Desi Wilson will be managing the team in Sandberg’s absence.  Sandberg will rejoin the team on Thursday July 17 to manage the remainder of the homestand at O’Brien Field.
