Stockton Ports Defeat San Jose Giants 12-5 - Advanced A, California League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – STOCKTON, Calif. - Following a tough road trip that saw the Stockton Ports go 2-5, Stockton was in dire need of some home cooking. They got it on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Against the league’s best team the Ports came up big, scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning and keeping a steady offense throughout as they topped the San Jose Giants by a final of 12-5.

San Jose took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an infield RBI single from Travis Denker, who was optioned to San Jose by the San Francisco Giants. The run was an unearned run allowed by Ports starter Scott Moore (2-1), who would earn the win in the ballgame.

The Ports returned fire in a big way in the bottom of the first. Giants starter Chris Begg gave up a leadoff double to Archie Gilbert, and Josh Horton followed with an RBI single to tie the game at one. Two batters later, Chris Carter gave the Ports a lead with an RBI double. Frank Martinez then walked, and Josh Donaldson reached on an infield single to load the bases. Raul Padron followed with an RBI groundout, and Mike Massaro made it 5-1 with a two-run single to center.

After San Jose got a run back in the top of the second, Begg’s struggles would continue. In the bottom of the second, he allowed a leadoff solo homer to Gilbert to give the Ports a 6-2 edge. In the third, Begg gave up a leadoff single to Martinez, followed by a two-run homer to Donaldson that gave Stockton an 8-1 lead. It was Donaldson’s first home run as an A’s farmhand since being sent over in the Rich Harden trade with the Chicago Cubs, and it knocked Begg from the game. He would end up with the loss, going two-plus innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits while striking out two.

In the bottom of the fourth, Corey Brown, who made his Banner Island Ballpark debut since being promoted from Low-A Kane County, hit a solo homer to right off Giants reliever Craig Whitaker to make it 9-2.

Moore kept the Giants off the scoreboard in his final three innings, earning the win after going five full frames and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

San Jose would try and come back in the sixth. With Jared Lansford on the hill, Andy D’Alessio hit a two-run homer to left-center to cut the deficit to 9-4. Those were the only runs Lansford allowed in his two innings of work.

Stockton put San Jose away in the bottom of the seventh. With Whitaker still on the hill, Martinez led off and was hit by a pitch. Donaldson doubled to put runners at second and third, and Padron came through with a two-run single to left to give the Ports a commanding 11-4 lead. Padron would score later in the inning on a double-play ball to make it 12-4. Whitaker allowed four runs in four-plus innings of work and did not factor into the decision.

San Jose added a run in the eighth--an unearned run given up by Derrick Gordon who fell victim to an error made by Gilbert in left. Sam Demel came on in the ninth and struck out the final two batters he faced to end the ballgame.

Dan Ortmeier, who played in his sixth game of a major league rehab assignment for San Jose, went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts.
