Lakewood BlueClaws Sweep Hagerstown Suns 4-2 and 4-2
Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 08:44AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The BlueClaws had gone 0-6 in their first six seven-inning doubleheader games. On Tuesday afternoon it was a different story for Lakewood, who swept a twin bill against the Hagerstown Suns, winning both games by an identical 4-2 score.
Lakewood defeated one of its own in Game 2, taking down former BlueClaw hurler Zack Segovia. Segovia, who was released by the Phillies last month, made his first South Atlantic League start since 2003. The right- hander gave up four runs, all earned, on eight hits in five innings in a losing effort.
Dominic Brown had an especially strong game against the 25-year old, going 2-for-3 against Segovia with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Brown was a tough out all day, recording four hits and a walk over the span of the doubleheader.
And while Segovia was struggling against his former club, the BlueClaws pieced together seven innings using three different relief pitchers. Moises Melendez made
ADVERTISEMENT his first start of the season, going four innings. The southpaw gave up two runs on seven hits, but exited the game with a 3-2 lead.
Sergio Escalona was dominant out of the bullpen, pitching two perfect innings with four strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. Zack Sterner (5-1) bridged the gap with a scoreless inning.
The BlueClaws put together a game-winning two-run second inning to take a 3-0 lead off of Segovia and the Suns. T.J. Warren had both RBIs on a two-out base hit.
The BlueClaws (7-6, 45-38) took Game 1 behind a near-complete game performance from Julian Sampson (5-1). The 19-year old right-hander pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits. He departed one out away from a complete game effort after walking Mark Gildea on a 3-2 pitch.
Jared Simon needed just one pitch to retire Valerio Heredia for his 13th save of the season.
Karl Bolt stayed hot, reaching base twice and scoring two runs. He was officially 1-for-3 with a double, but also reached on an error. Jay Miller and Brown were the only BlueClaws to post multi-hit efforts.
The BlueClaws did a majority of their damage against Cole Kimball (3-4), who gave up a pair of runs on five hits in five innings. Edulin Abreu gave up the final two runs on just one base hit.
There was plenty of emotion from the Hagerstown (8- 5, 42-40) side throughout the course of the afternoon. Third baseman Stephen King was ejected in the first game for arguing over a missed tag in Game 1 and pitching coach Paul Menhart was ejected in Game 2 for arguing over a check swing.
