State College Spikes Drop Fourth Straight After 5-2 Loss to Williamsport Crosscutters

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – STATE COLLEGE, PA—Williamsport scored a pair of runs off of State College’s Kyle McPherson in the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie,
enabling the Crosscutters to give the Spikes their fourth straight defeat,
5-2, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (3-11) got a triple from Quincy Latimore in the second
inning, and two hits from Cole White to highlight their offensive efforts.
Williamsport (7-7) now takes a 5-1 lead in the 2008 SawBuck Series, with
the two teams not scheduled to meet again until August.
Four base hits in the fifth by the Crosscutters off of McPherson (1-1)
keyed the Williamsport effort. Arlon Quiroz started things off with a bunt
single. With one out, D’Arby Myers, d’Arnaud, and Cody Overbeck each
singled in turn to drive in Quiroz and Myers and give the Crosscutters the
lead.
D’Arnaud continued to plague the Spikes in 2008 with one of those hits in
a 2-for-4 performance. D’Arnaud also doubled and drove in a run in the
game. The Crosscutters’ catcher, who is the younger brother of the Spikes’
SeatSub Challenge 2008 Contest Chase d’Arnaud, is now hitting .478 against the Spikes in 2008.
McPherson was handed his first loss of the season five days after his
first win, a stellar four-hit, one-run effort over six innings in a start
at Auburn on Thursday.
Tonight, in front of 3,228 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, Ryan Kelly
started the game for the Spikes, going four innings, allowing two runs on
three hits and striking out four.
Williamsport took the lead in the second inning with two runs off of
Kelly. State College then closed the gap in the bottom half of the second
with the triple by Latimore, followed by a Kyle Morgan groundout to drive
in the run and make it 2-1, Williamsport.
In the fourth, Calvin Anderson led off with a walk, going to second on a
Latimore groundout and third on a Morgan flyout. Mark Carver then
delivered an RBI single to tie the game up.
Williamsport then went ahead in the fifth, and added an insurance run in
the sixth when Quiroz single in Troy Hanzawa to complete the scoring.
Justin De Fratus (2-0) started the game for Williamsport. He picked up the
win after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out
four. Michael Schwimer got his first save of the year for Williamsport,
finishing the game by striking out five Spikes in four innings and
allowing only one hit.
The Spikes’ also got a double from Chad Rice, who has now hit in six of
the last seven games.
Chase d’Arnaud was missing from the lineup for the second consecutive
game. He is day-to-day after colliding with Crosscutters pitcher Michael
Cisco at first base during Sunday’s game at State College.
Tomorrow, the Spikes start a three-game series with the Vermont Lake
Monsters. Game one starts at 7:05 p.m. with State College right-hander
Ramon Aguero (0-2) facing Vermont right-hander P.J. Dean (1-0). It will be
