Myrtle Beach Pelicans Sweep Winston-Salem Warthogs With 8-3 Win

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Myrtle Beach continued their dominance over Winston-Salem with an 8-3 win on Saturday night to sweep the three-game series at Ernie Shore Field. The first place Pelicans improved to 12-2 against the Warthogs this season including seven consecutive wins.
For the third straight game, Myrtle Beach pounced on the Warthogs early with three runs in the first inning. Gorkys Hernandez walked and moved to second on a single by Eric Campbell. Tyler Flowers followed with a double to bring the first run across. An RBI groundout by Travis Jones scored Campbell and Ernest Mejia added a run-scoring base hit to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.
The Warthogs trimmed their deficit to one in the second inning with RBI doubles by Estee Harris and Freddie Thon. The Pelicans responded quickly as Ernest Mejia blasted a three-run home run off Clevelan Santeliz in the third inning. Concepcion Rodriguez followed with a triple and scored on a passed ball to give Myrtle Beach a 7-2 lead. C.J. Retherford, who finished with three hits, tallied an RBI single in the third inning to bring the Warthogs within four.
Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Chris Vines (4-1) tossed 5 1/3 innings and held the Warthogs to three runs on eight hits. The right-hander did not allow a walk and collected four strikeouts. Pelican’s reliever Michael Broadway went the rest of the way in keeping the Warthogs scoreless while allowing just one hit to earn his second save. Santeliz (2-4) only lasted 3 1/3 innings and surrendered seven runs on six hits with four hits to suffer the loss.
The Warthogs have Sunday off and will welcome the Salem Avalanche to Ernie Shore Field for a four-game series beginning on Monday at 7 p.m.
