Bowie Baysox Defeat Harrisburg Senators 5-3 - AA, Eastern League

Bowie, MD - The Baysox overcame a two-run deficit with a four-run seventh inning to lift them over the Senators 5-3 in game one of a four-game series Monday night. Bowie pitcher Zach Clark made his second start of the season for the Baysox and threw four innings of one-hit ball before getting into trouble in the fifth. Clark finished up with 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Rommie Lewis worked 2.1 shutout innings to earn his first victory of the year.
 

The Baysox struck first on Sebastien Boucher’s first inning solo homerun. It was Boucher’s second solo shot in as many at-bats, he hit a walk-off homerun Sunday night to finish off the Phillies.

Clark cruised through four innings and retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth. With two outs, Javi Herrera singled into right field. Matt Rogelstad drew a walk and Seth Bynum blooped a base hit into shallow center field to load the bases. Ian Desmond crushed a double into the gap in left-center and all three runners came in to score and give the Senators a 3-1 lead. Clark got Mike Daniel to ground out to shortstop to end the inning. Clark was disappointed with his fifth-inning performance, but didn’t let it ruin the night, “I left a couple pitches up, I got behind. I mean we won, but I wish I could have done without that walk. We did the best we could, some hits fell in down the line, we did all we could with it. The hit off the wall, I could have done without that. Just left that pitch up, got behind on him 3-1, I knew he was batting ninth but I know the guy can hit a little bit – he just got a good pitch and hit it.”
 

Baysox pitching coach Mike Griffin echoed Clark’s sentiments, “I like him, he’s a strike-thrower, which was evident tonight. I thought he did a good job. With two outs in the fifth he lost his composure a little bit. Got behind in the counts and had to elevate a few pitches which cost him three runs, but I don’t look at that right now. He’s a young kid who started in A ball this year and he’s come up fast and he’s done a good job for us in two starts now.”
 

With Chorye Spoone still on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, the Baysox have an open spot in their rotation. Griffin wouldn’t mind seeing Clark take that spot, “Sure, why not, absolutely. He’s a strike-thrower, the guy goes out and pitches aggressive. I mean that’s what we’re trying to accomplish here, he does that and mixes his speeds well. Absolutely, no question.”
 

The 3-1 scoreline held up until the Baysox came up to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Carlos Rojas led off with a base hit into right field and moved to second on a broken-bat single by Blake Davis. Mike Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with one out. Steve Torrealba got the call to pinch-hit for left fielder Sebastien Boucher and blasted a double that carried over the right fielder’s head, allowing Rojas and Davis to score and tie the game at 3-3. Jonathan Tucker came in to pinch-run for Torrealba and he came in to score when Lou Montanez drove a triple to center field. With two outs and Montanez at third, Matt Wieters pulled a base hit through the hole between first and second to bring Montanez home and give Bowie a 5-3 lead.
 

Rommie Lewis worked into the eighth inning, allowing no runs on just three hits. Wilfredo Perez came on and retired all five batters he faced to earn a five-out save, his first of the season for the Baysox. With the victory, the Baysox improve to 58-45 and move ahead of Harrisburg by half a game for second place in the Southern Division. The Baysox look to increase that margin Monday night with RHP Jason Berken (7-3, 3.83 ERA) going up against Harrisburg RHP Adrian Alaniz (0-2, 4.05 ERA).
