COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four different Indians launched long balls, including three in the eighth inning, as Indianapolis posted an 11-2 victory over Columbus Sunday evening at Cooper Stadium. The Indians improve to 47-55 overall and 23-28 on the road, while the Clippers fall to 54-46 on the season and 25-24 at home. The win gives the Tribe the series split in its last ever visit to Cooper Stadium.
Every Indianapolis position player scored at least one run and recorded at least one hit as the Indians pounded out a season high 18 , including a season high eight of the extra-base variety. Four of those extra-base knocks also left the yard to snap the Tribe’s 10 game homerless streak.
RF Adam Boeve began the Indians power surge with a two-run homer to center in the third. The Tribe then exploded for three more round trippers in a five-run eighth.
Pinch hitter Ryan Mulhern started the eighth inning attack with a three-run long ball to right, before McCutchen and Walker capped the frame with back-to-back dingers to put the game away for the Tribe.
The Indians benefited from an early lead as LF Nyjer Morgan led off the game with a double and trotted home on a single by 1B Steve Pearce. SS Brian Bixler then singled before Boeve plated Pearce with a base hit of his own.
McCutchen (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI), Pearce (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI), Bixler (2-for-5, 1 R), Boeve (3-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI), 2B Josh Wilson (2-for-5, 1 R), C Michel Hernandez (3-for-5, 1 R) and Mulhern (2-for-2, 1 R, 5 RBI) all recorded multi-hit games for the Indians.
The three-hit effort for Hernandez was his team-leading ninth of the season, while the three-hit night for Boeve was his first of the campaign. Mulhern’s five-RBI performance was also a season best for the Indians and included his first home run in an Indians’ uniform.
Wilson also reached a career milestone with his two base hits giving him 1000 in his Minor League career, while extending his hitting steak to six games.
Indianapolis RHP Mike Thompson (4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 SO) picked up the win in relief of LHP Tom Gorzelanny (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) to improve to 2-1 on the season. Thompson along with RHP Jesse Chavez (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and RHP Franklyn German (1.0 IP) combined for six scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Clippers only offensive output came from 3B Ryan Zimmerman, who on the final day of his rehab assignment belted a two-run homer in the third inning,
RHP Dennis Tankersley (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO) started and took the loss for the Clippers to drop to 2-3 on the year.
Zimmerman (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Tankersley (2-for-2) turned in the only multi-hit performances for Columbus.
Indianapolis opens an eight-game homestand on Monday at 7:00 p.m. against Charlotte. LHP Clayton Richard is scheduled to start for the Knights, while the Indians have yet to announce a starter.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Post-game quotes -- INF/OF Adam Boeve
(on the advantage of facing Clippers starter Dennis Tankersley multiple times)
"It’s definitely a comfort factor, when you see the same guy so many times. We were able to pick up the ball well and swing at the right pitches. Everybody was pretty confident coming into today’s game that we would be able to put some runs on the board."
(on his two-run home run to center field)
"It was a 3-2 fastball kind of middle away and I just went with it. I got some good wood on it and was able to drive it the other way. It was a good at-bat where I was able to work the count, stay back and put a good swing on the ball."
(On gaining momentum from an 11-2 win)
"I think this game is going to be big for us. Being able to put 18 hits and 11 runs on the board is definitely a good sign for us swinging the bats. Hopefully this gives us some momentum when we head home and hopefully we can continue to swing the bats like we did today."
