Southern League Pitcher and Hitter of the Week Announced
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 12:32PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –
Sanchez saved his All-Star performance for after the game itself. After striking out in his
only two at-bats in the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game on July 14, Sanchez led the
league in several offensive categories during the ensuing abbreviated week. He topped
the circuit in batting average (.579) by over 100 points, RBI (9), hits (11), slugging
percentage (1.158) and on-base percentage (.667) while tying for the top spot in runs (6)
and extra-base hits (5). In his first game after the break, the 24-year-old Sanchez
homered twice – including a solo blast against a rehabbing Mike Hampton – and drove in
five runs in Wednesday’s 9-5 win at Mississippi. Two nights later, he connected for a
clutch three-run homer in the ninth inning off fellow All-Star Luis Valdez to give
Carolina a 3-2 victory. The native of Miami, FL added three hits on Saturday and two
more Sunday, extending his hitting streak to nine games. During the streak, Sanchez has
batted .459 (17-for-37) with four homers and 13 RBI.

Pitcher of the Week
TODD REDMOND, RHP, MISSISSIPPI BRAVES
Redmond did everything but record a win on Friday against the Carolina Mudcats. The
23-year-old allowed just one hit – a single – without permitting a run in a season high-
tying eight innings before departing with a two-run lead. In the ninth, the league’s Hitter
of the Week spoiled Redmond’s chance at a league high-tying ninth win with a go-ahead,
three-run homer. Despite not getting a decision, Redmond recorded six strikeouts to
move into third in the league with 97 overall. The native of St. Petersburg, FL also
lowered his ERA to 3.34, good for eighth in the circuit. It was the second impressive
showing during the week for Redmond, who pitched a flawless inning with one strikeout
in the Southern League All-Star Game on July 14.
