Connecticut Defenders Clobber Portland Sea Dogs 18-6 - AA, Eastern League

Portland, ME - The Connecticut Defenders spoiled game two of the Big Papi era, clobbering the Portland Sea Dogs 18-6 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. David Ortiz went hitless for the first time in five rehab-starts with Pawtucket and Portland. Ortiz finished 0-for-4 and scored Portland's second run by reaching on an error by the pitcher in the fourth.
Connecticut's 3 through 5 hitters (Ben Copeland, Pablo Sandoval and Adam Witter) went a combined 10-for-19, 3 HR and 14 RBI.
Garrett Broshuis (11-6) worked five innings on six runs (one earned) to earn the win for Connecticut. Kris Johnson (7-5) lasted just 3.1 IP, allowing eight hits, eight runs (five earned) on five walks to take the loss for Portland.
Copeland finished 5-for-6, 6 RBI, delivering a 2-run single in the second, 2-run double in the fourth, RBI double in the fifth and a solo-homer in the seventh. Sandoval went 3-for-7 with a 3-run homer in the fourth, RBI single in the eighth and a two-run double in the ninth. Witter greeted Mike James by cracking a 2-run shot in the eighth.
The Defenders took a 4-0 lead in the second by scoring four unearned runs off Johnson. In the bottom of the inning, Mark Wagner launched a solo-blast to left-center field.

Connecticut scored five runs in the top of the fourth and Portland responded by scoring five unearned runs off Broshuis in their half of the fourth. The 'Dogs had only one baserunner (Bryan Pritz - single) after the fourth inning.
Adam Cowart fired three scoreless frames on one hit and two strikeouts. Justin Hedrick worked a perfect ninth.
Jorge Jimenez knocked in two with a bases loaded single during Portland's 5-run fourth. Argenis Diaz, Pritz and Iggy Suarez also drove in runs for the 'Dogs.
Portland is now 1-3 on their 6-game homestand and host Connecticut on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. David Ortiz is scheduled to play in his third game with the Sea Dogs.
