Jayson Nix Hits Walk-Off Home Run to Give Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 7-6 Win Over New Orleans Zephyrs

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Colorado Springs, CO - Jayson Nix had no reason to slam his helmet a second time Tuesday night. After striking out to end the ninth inning with the winning run in scoring position, Nix came to the plate in the 12th inning with one out and took Tim McNab’s 1-0 offering over the left field fence, giving Colorado Springs a 7-6 victory in 12 innings against New Orleans.

The Sky Sox needed a ninth-inning comeback after the Zephyrs took a 6-5 lead in the top half of the ninth inning on Andy Green’s run-scoring double.

The home team was up for the task and ultimately sent the game into extra frames when Mike McCoy raced home after Nate Field’s pitch skipped past the Zephyr’s backstop.

McCoy was pinch running for Doug Bernier, who had just hit a 1-out looping single. The new addition to the Sky Sox roster promptly stole second base before reaching third base when Cory Sullivan legged out a hit on a swinging bunt to the pitcher.

Greg Reynolds pitched well enough to get a win in front of the 6,411 fans at Security Service Field, allowing just one run and two hits during his five innings. He left with his team ahead 3-1.

Alberto Arias relieved the former first-round pick and was greeted with four consecutive extra-base hits to begin the sixth inning. Jesus Feliciano and Andy Green started the damage with back-to-back doubles fore John Rodriguez’s triple tied the game at 3. Valentino Pascucci capped the scoring with a two-run home run to center field, giving the visitors a two-run lead.

Nelson Figueroa allowed just two earned runs in his seven innings of work, but four errors from the New Orleans’ defense caused him to give up five runs. Figueroa was the culprit of two of those errors, both on pickoff attempts at first base. The first wayward attempt landed Sullivan on third base while the pitcher’s second error allowed Nix to race all the way to the plate.

Matt Daley pitched two perfect innings to earn his second win against four losses.

Field blew his fourth save of the season after allowing a run to score in the ninth inning.

McNab (3-2) took the loss after giving up the bomb to Nix that ended the game.

The Sky Sox and Zephyrs will have a quick turnaround with a 12:35 game Wednesday. Colorado Springs will send Jason Hirsh (2-2, 5.07) to the mound against Claudio Vargas (3-2, 4.91).
