WOODBRIDGE, Va.— It is easy to get used to winning in Northern Virginiaespecially when your team is 20 games over .500 in July. However, on a
rare day game at Pfitzner Stadium Wednesday, winning was not the case as
the Kinston Indians prevailed 6-4 over Potomac preventing the Nationals
from winning their third straight game.
From the beginning of the game until the end it seemed the day was a
struggle. Joe Norrito started in place of expected starter Zack Segovia
and the right-hander labored over his four innings. The K-Tribe handled
the Florida-native in the top of the first inning stringing together five
consecutive singles after the first out was recorded. Jared Goedert,
Carlos Rivero, and Niuman Romero each provided RBI hits, and by the time
Potomac came to bat for the first time, they trailed 3-0.
Potomac answered in the second when Aaron Seuss led off with a double and
later came around to score on Brian Finegan's base hit. That made the
score 3-1, but once again Norrito ran into trouble.
A leadoff walk to Nick Weglarz in the top of third put a man on for
Goedert, who was red-hot on the day going 3-4 with two RBI. Goedert
knocked in his teammate with a double, and two batters later, Niuman
Romero lifted a sacrifice fly that gave the K-Tribe a comfortable 5-1
advantage. Norrito (7-2) gave up six runs on eight hits and did not notch
a strikeout in just his second loss of the season.
Meanwhile, making his Carolina League debut by no means unnerved Kinston
start man Kelvin De La Cruz. De La Cruz (1-0) was good enough through 5
1/3 innings to earn the victory and sent down six via the punch-out on the
way.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Nationals mounted one of their
trademark charges. Dee Brown's one-out walk was followed by Trevor
Lawhorn's single putting two men on. Then, Seuss, who went 2-4 in the
game, came through with his second double of the afternoon scoring both
runners. Finegan followed suit when he brought Potomac to within 6-4 with
his second run-scoring single on the next play. However, that was all the
offense Potomac would generate the rest of the game.
Jack Spradlin kept the Indians quiet with 3 2/3 shutout innings of relief.
The left-hander gave up three hits but has not allowed a run in his last
three appearances.
With five shutout innings today, the Nationals bullpen extended their
scoreless innings streak to 16, a span of seven games.
The Nationals and the Indians will play the series finale tomorrow night
at Pfitzner Stadium. Left-hander Ross Detwiler (5-6, 5.32) is scheduled to
take the mound for Potomac against righty Carlton Smith (7-5, 4.45) from
Kinston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
