Bob Matuszak | Comments Off | Brandon Magee Pitches Seven Strong Innings in New Hampshire Fisher Cats Rain-Shortened 4-3 Win Over Trenton Thunder
Friday, July 25, 2008 at 08:50AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Manchester, NH- Brandon Magee pitched a seven-inning
complete game, and Ryan Klosterman hit a pair of sacrifice
flies to carry the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a rain-shortened 4-3 victory
over the Trenton Thunder before a standing-room-only crowd of 7,169 at
Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Magee (4-11) scattered
six hits and allowed three runs -one earned- to win for the fourth time in his
last five decisions. The right-hander struck out two and walked
two.
Trenton (64-39) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning
against Magee when left fielder Jacob Butler dropped a two-out fly ball from
Colin Curtis (0-for-2, BB), allowing Ramiro Pena (single) and Austin Jackson
(walk) to score.
The first bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Klosterman
(0-for-1, 2 SF, 2 RBI) against losing pitcher Eric Hacker in the bottom of the
second inning cut the deficit to 2-1. Eric Nielsen (2-for-2, 2 2B, 2 R, HBP),
who earlier stroked a double to left-center field, scored on the Klosterman sac
fly to make it 2-1.
New Hampshire (42-62) tied the game, 2-2, in the
bottom of the fourth inning when Andrew Pinckney (1-for-3, 2B, R) hit a leadoff
double and scored on Klosterman's second bases-loaded sac fly of the
game.
The Fisher Cats went ahead to stay in the bottom of the sixth
inning when Nielsen doubled to left, knocking Hacker out of the game. Kyle
Phillips (1-for-1, 2 SAC, R) reached on his second sacrifice bunt of the game
when Trenton reliever Zach Kroenke threw wildly to first base. That allowed
Nielsen to score and put Phillips on second base. Scott Campbell (1-for-4, RBI)
slapped an opposite-field single, scoring Phillips to give the Fisher Cats a 4-2
lead.
Hacker (5-2) allowed three runs on five hits in five-plus
innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked three.
Cody Ehlers
(1-for-3, R), Joe Muich (1-for-3), and James Cooper (1-for-3, RBI) strung
together consecutive two-out singles off Magee in the top of the seventh inning,
with Ehlers scoring on Cooper's hit to make it a 4-3 game.
That was how
it would end when rain halted the game after six-and-a-half innings, giving New
Hampshire a split of the four-game series and a 5-3 homestand.
The
Fisher Cats open a three-game weekend series at First Energy Stadium in Reading
on Friday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire right-hander Robert Ray (4-4, 3.35) is
slated to start against Reading right-hander J.D. Durbin (5-4, 3.16).
