High Desert Mavericks Defeat Lancaster JeftHawks 5-4 - Advanced A, California League
Friday, July 4, 2008 at 08:48AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – ADELANTO, CA – The fireworks started early for the High Desert Mavericks. In front of their biggest crowd of the season, the Mavericks rallied from three runs behind in the ninth inning as they came back to defeat the JetHawks 5-4. The JetHawks lost the final three games of the series, the last two each by just one run.
Lancaster controlled the game until the fateful ninth. Luis Exposito’s two-run homer in the second inning appeared to be enough for starter Tony Bajoczky. Bajoczky hurled his strongest start of the season, allowing just one run and four hits through seven innings. It is the fourth straight quality start for the right-hander and he looked in good shape to earn his fourth win.
The outlook was particularly rosy after the JetHawks added to their lead in the top of the ninth inning. Exposito singled and Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled for one run. After Lancaster loaded the bases, Jason Place drove in a second run with a single to put the JetHawks in the lead 4-1.

Richie Lentz was impressive in the eighth inning, striking out two. As Lentz started the ninth, he had turned in 26 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest streak for a Lancaster pitcher in more than three years. However, he struggled to open the ninth as he walked Carlos Triunfel. The Mavericks put up three hits in a row to tie the game. Jon Still’s throwing error on a bunt by Travis Scott pushed the final run in as the Mavericks stunned the JetHawks.
Several players extended hitting streaks for Lancaster. Chiang’s double moved his streak to nine straight. Zak Farkes has now hit in eight consecutive games. Place had two hits and has at least one hit in seven in a row and at least two hits in six in a row. Lars Anderson also had two hits and his streak is at six.
