Myrtle Beach Pelicans Jump on Potomac Nationals Early for 8-3 Victory - Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –WOODBRIDGE, Va.—Potomac starter Ross Detwiler probably wishes he started tonight's game much like the way he finished it. Four early runs against the left-hander helped the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Nationals 8-3
for the second consecutive night at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Pelicans jumped on the Missouri-native with two runs in each of the first two innings. The second hitter of the game Willie Cabrera set the tone for the evening with a home run, and three hitters later Brandon Hicks followed up with an RBI single. In the next frame, Eric Campbell continued the surge against Detwiler with a two-out two-RBI double for an early 4-0 lead.

Despite the early offense from the Pelicans, Detwiler (5-5) would buckle down and not surrender. The 22-year-old retired 11 consecutive hitters from the third inning through the sixth before getting replaced after Jon Mark Owings' single to lead off the top of the seventh. He ultimately lasted six innings while giving up four runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.

Even with the deficit, Potomac battled against Pelicans starter Scott Diamond who entered the contest with a gaudy 6-1 record. The P-Nats scattered runs in the third and the fifth inning thanks to RBI hits from Trevor Lawhorn and Dan Lyons cutting Myrtle Beach's lead to 4-2.

Potomac squandered a golden opportunity to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Three consecutive hitters reached base to load the bases with just one out, but Brian Peacock was called out on strikes against
reliever Tyler Wilson. Brian Finegan brought the P-Nats one run closer with an RBI infield hit knocking in Dee Brown. But again, with the bases loaded, Wilson was able to escape the threat by striking out Francisco Plasencia.

With a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth inning, the Pelicans padded their lead with insurance erupting for four runs against the Nationals bullpen. For the second consecutive night Myrtle Beach sent 11 hitters to the plate in an inning preserving the win for Diamond (7-1) and the save for Wilson.
