Winston-Salem Warthogs Dominate Frederick Keys 6-2 - Advanced A, Carolina League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs claimed their sixth straight home win with a 6-2 victory over Frederick in front of a packed house on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field.  A strong start from Anthony Carter and three solo home runs provided the spark the Warthogs needed to move into sole possession of first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.
Winston-Salem jumped in front quickly as Paulo Orlando crushed a solo home run off Brandon Erbe to lead things off in the first inning.  Frederick responded with a pair of runs in the third inning to take control.  Mike Pierce tied the game with a solo shot of Carter.  Later in the inning, Brandon Tripp lined an RBI single to right field that gave the Keys a 2-1 lead.
Orlando struck again with a solo blast in the third inning to knot the game at two.  It was his first multi-homer game of the season.  The Warthogs regained the lead in the fourth inning when Estee Harris and C.J. Lang hit back-to-back singles with one out.  Joe Persichina followed with a two-run triple to give Winston-Salem a 4-2 lead.
The Warthogs tacked on a run in the sixth inning on an RBI sacrifice by Francisco Hernandez and added another in the eighth inning when Salvador Sanchez slapped a solo home run off Kyle Schmidt.
Carter (2-2) worked six innings and held the Keys to two runs on five hits.  MLNGirlsFeb2008_Lisa.jpg

He did not allow a walk and struck out a pair to earn his second win since joining the Warthogs.  Ricky Brooks breezed thru two shutout innings while striking out four and Kanekoa Texeira registered his 18th save of the season when he struck out Billy Rowell to end the game.
Erbe (6-8) lasted 5 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs on seven hits while striking out seven to suffer the loss.
The Warthogs and Keys conclude their three-game series on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field.  Winston-Salem will start RHP Michael Dubee (3-4, 5.14), while Frederick will send RHP Jake Arrieta (5-4, 3.02) to the mound.  The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
