Frederick Keys Knock Around Winston-Salem Warthogs Bullpen in 10-4 Victory

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs wasted numerous early scoring chances and their bullpen failed late as Frederick rolled to a 10-4 victory in front of 6,784 fans at Ernie Shore Field on Friday night.  Over the first seven innings, Winston-Salem managed just two runs while leaving 11 runners on base including 9 in scoring position in snapping their six-game home winning streak.

Frederick utilized an effectively wild Jake Arrieta early then tallied eight runs against an ineffective Warthogs bullpen to avoid being swept.  Arrieta (6-4) worked five innings, but wiggled out of bases loaded jams in the first and second inning while allowing two runs (one earned).  The young right-hander surrendered four hits and five walks while striking out a career-high 10 to collect the win.

The Warthogs took advantage of some sloppy Keys defense in the first to take an early lead.  Paulo Orlando reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by Arrieta.  Back-to back walks loaded the bases with no outs.  After Brett Bonvechio struck out, Salvador Sanchez hit a potential inning-ending double play ball to shortstop that was mishandled by Todd Davison.  Orlando scored on the play to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead.

Frederick responded with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.  With Zach Dillon on second base and one out, Brandon Tripp hit s slow roller that Brandon Allen bobbled at first, which put runners on the corners with one out.  Brandon Snyder followed with an RBI sacrifice fly and Billy Rowell put the Keys in front with a run-scoring double.

An RBI sacrifice fly by Zach Dillon in the fifth inning extended the Keys advantage to 3-1.  The Warthogs trimmed their deficit to one when Brett Bonvechio smacked a double to left that scored Brandon Allen.  Frederick answered back in the sixth inning when Brandon Snyder blasted a two-run home run off Jacob Rasner to give the Keys a 5-2 lead.

The two teams traded a run in the seventh and eighth inning with Winston-Salem collecting an RBI single from Estee Harris and Rowell crushing a solo shot to give Frederick a 6-3 lead.  Brandon Allen added an RBI single for the Warthogs in the eighth inning to cut the Keys lead to two.  A grand slam by Chris Vinyard in the ninth inning put the exclamation point on the Keys victory.

Warthog’s starter Michael Dubee (3-5) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts in four innings.  Keys reliever Chad Thall recorded the final four outs to earn his seventh save of the season.

The Warthogs continue their home stand thru the weekend when they welcome the Kinston Indians to Ernie Shore Field for the first of three on Saturday night.  Winston-Salem will start RHP Matt Long (3-8, 5.56), while Kinston will hand the ball to RHP Carlton Smith (5-5, 4.53).  The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
